About the artwork:

Miami Ice reflects Dean Cogle’s fascination with hand-painted signage and the once ubiquitous fibro-and-timber buildings of the Gold Coast’s 20^th century heyday.

The Miami Ice Works building with its mural of a sun wearing sunglasses, known as Mr Sunny, was a popular site for photographers, even featuring in the 1988 music video for John Farnham’s ‘Two Strong Hearts’.

About the artist:

Dean Cogle (1957 – 2019) was a self-taught artist, arriving in Queensland as a 20-year-old New Zealander. Adept at figurative representation, he became a prolific illustrator, graphic designer, portrait artist and muralist. Cogle also had an eye for architecture, deftly capturing the Gold Coast’s sun-soaked streets in their mid-century glory.
