Created exclusively for HOTA, this square print features the artwork Limmen Bight – My Mother’s Country, 1993 by Ginger Riley Munduwalawala.
About the artwork:
This unique topographical representation of his mother’s Country alludes to the depths of both sky and sea, contrasted with the powerful reds of the landscape and snake ancestor Garimala. Throughout his artworks, Riley also repeatedly featured the Ngak Ngak, his totemic, white-breasted sea eagle, which is said to be the guardian of Marra Country.
About the artist:
Ginger Riley Munduwalawala (1936 – 2002) was born in the saltwater Country of the Marra people in south-east Arnhem Land, an area which he painted exclusively. Riley was known for his distinctive landscapes and daring use of bright acrylic colour – later being given the moniker “the boss of colour” – layering his paintings with narrative and ancestral significance.
