About the artist:
Guwumji Paddy Bedford (1922 – 2007) was a senior Gija (East Kimberley) cultural practitioner, song man, artist and custodian. Bedford was skilled with bodypainting for ceremony before transferring to brush and canvas in 1998.
About the artwork:
In Fig Tree, Bedford documents a ngarrangkarni (Dreaming) site associated with the wallaby and Thoowoonggoony (fig tree), on his mother’s Country at a location known as Jamelayigoon (the Gija name for Fig Tree Hole). Two circular forms depict the cliffs at Fig Tree Hole, whole black parallel lines trace the creek that runs through the site.
